This just in: Alcohol- May cause car accidents and unintended pregnancy.
On any given day, on any given news site, stories of silly lawsuits captivate viewers. There was the person who sued McDonald’s because the coffee was too hot. There was the person who sued Pirate’s Booty for lying about their product’s calorie content. Once, someone won in small claims court because Honda claimed 50 mph gallon in their vehicles and it simply was not true. Looking back at these top stories makes me wonder about people. First, has our society fallen so far from our natural instincts of common sense that we are really entitled sue everyone and every company that pulls one over on us? Second, do we really need to seek financial compensation, and notify industry watch dogs because we don’t already know that: coffee is hot, junk food causes weight gain, and some results may vary?
I think if we have come to a place in our society were we must be told everything we should already know, then we should drop the sugar coating and mandate labeling every product with warnings about the things we should already know about it. Anything fried should come with a warning that these products cause high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and the possibility of decreased self esteem with long term use. Cigarette warnings should read that, “this product is most likely going to kill you, cause people to look down on you, and may become more expensive than the weekly fuel bill for your vehicle.” In case you didn’t already know, alcohol may cause car accidents and unintended pregnancy.
I am already fully aware of these warnings for all of these products, as I think most people are. I like to think I am smart enough on my own to proceed with caution around all of these products already knowing the possible repercussions of their use. And I am certainly smart enough to figure out the truth about these products without a heads up from the food and drug administration. So in case you didn’t already know the damages of the above listed products, you too can now be an informed consumer and have grounds to sue no one but yourself if you experience any of these unintended repercussions from using the aforementioned products.
