We celebrate the birth of every new arrival,
Their birth is key to a surname’s survival.
Each year they make a wish, as the candle flames go out,
They have big dreams for a corner office and a lot of clout.
They go to school to learn more than we could ever teach,
They have their own goals that we help them reach.
One day they will find love and stand before us all to take a solemn vow,
The one who stole their heart is officially part of the family now.
The cycle continues, they form a family of their own,
They call their parents for wisdom until their own kids are grown.
With each generation caring on a legacy it’s a lot of the same,
Hopes for graduations and weddings, but the individual must find their own way.
Along the way there’s heartbreak, failure and a lot of tears,
It’s hard but we grow from stumbling and facing our biggest fears.
The greatest lesson we learn is how to forgive,
Letting go of bitterness allows us to live.
Marriage is a union where two become one,
Believe me that’s easier said than done.
It’s learning to communicate, compromise, how to fight fair,
And trusting each other enough to build the life that you share.
True love is sharing your burrito when they said they only wanted half,
It’s always trying to have a good time together and learning to laugh.
Life is cyclical: it’s good, then bad, then good again,
But we can always start over no matter what stage we are in.
We impart wisdom to the next generation, things our loved ones once said,
It’s how we remember them long after they’re dead.
When you marry someone you marry their family and accept who they are,
Don’t vow “till death do us part” at the altar, if you won’t go that far.
I’m fire and he’s earth yet somehow we balance each other,
We face challenges head on taking turns caring for one another.
I know someday we’ll have to say goodbye and our union will end,
One of us standing at an altar surrounded by friends and family just like it began.
I’m thankful for the life we’ve build together and the adventures we’ve had,
But even just thinking about losing you right now makes me sad.
When I’m gone I’ll just leave behind my words on a page,
I hope one day I’ll get the chance to share my wisdom on a big stage.
